SWEENEY/BURZICHELLI INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO ADDRESS RECENT COURT DECISION AND PROVIDE FOR DIRECT SHIPPING OF WINE
LEGISLATION GUARANTEES FUTURE GROWTH OF NJ WINE INDUSTRY
NJ Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-3) and Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-3) have introduced major legislation, S-2782/A-3897, to preserve New Jersey's retail wine outlets, and allow for direct shipping of wine from small wineries to New Jersey residents. S-2782, sponsored by Senate President Sweeney and Senator Jim Beach (D-6), and A-3897, sponsored by Assemblyman Burzichelli and 16 other Assembly members both Republicans and Democrats, will guarantee the future of New Jersey's dynamic wine industry, which now ranks seventh in the nation in total wine production.
Sweeney, Burzichelli and their colleagues acted in response to a recent U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit decision regarding New Jersey's wine retail outlets, which were declared unconstitutional. S-2782/A-3897 not only restores the retail wine outlets but goes further and lifts the ban on direct shipping. The bill will preserve the status quo to NJ wineries prior to the court decision, and will put New Jersey's wine industry on the road to continued growth and prosperity.
As you can see, members of the Legislature from all across New Jersey are supporting our effort to provide state residents with consumer choice in wine:
